Introduction

This article provides guidance for users experiencing difficulties updating their name on HashiCorp Cloud Platform (HCP) accounts and outlines an alternative method using GitHub integration.

Problem:

Users may find their email address displayed instead of their name in the Name field under Account Settings, and they want to update it to reflect their actual name.

Cause:

Currently, there is no way to edit the name or basic information for accounts created using the email & password method.

Solution:

As an alternative, users can create a GitHub account and sign-in to HCP. This automatically syncs the primary email and name from their GitHub profile.

For Existing GitHub Users:

1. Delete the existing GITHUB account in HashiCorp Cloud Platform (HCP). To perform the account deletion, please contact HCP Support for assistance with this account deletion process.

   Note: If you are the sole owner of your HCP organization, you will need to invite a new user with an email/password account and transfer ownership to them before proceeding with the account deletion.

2. Update the Name field by following these steps:
   • Log in to your GitHub account.
   • Ensure your name is correctly updated in your GitHub public profile by following these steps:
     • Click on your profile picture at the top-right corner.
     • Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
     • Under "Public Profile," update the "Name" fields as needed.
3. Recreate the HCP account using the "Sign in with GitHub" option.
4. Validate that the account now reflects the name from your updated GitHub profile in HCP Account Settings.

For New GitHub Users:

New users can avoid this issue by creating their HCP account using the GitHub integration method. 

Ensure your name is correctly updated in your GitHub public profile by following these steps:

  • Click on your profile picture at the top-right corner.
  • Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
  • Under "Public Profile," update the "Name" field as needed.

This method ensures that your account on HCP reflects your preferred name by leveraging the information from your GitHub profile.

Ownership Change (Optional)

• HCP organizations can have a maximum of 3 users with the owner role. Users with the existing owner role can add and remove other organization owners over time, but organizations require at least one owner at all times.
