Problem
Users who created their HCP Terraform account using Single Sign-On (SSO) may be unable to access certain features if they do not have a password for their account. This occurs when step-up authentication is required.
Cause
As an added security measure, HCP Terraform requires step-up authentication when you access sensitive areas of your account. These areas include user settings, organizations configured with a different SAML identity provider (IdP), and organizations where SSO is not configured.
If your account was created via SSO and you have never set a password, you will be unable to complete the step-up authentication prompt, preventing access to these features.
Solution
To resolve this issue, you must set a password for your HCP Terraform account by using the password reset process.
Procedure
- Log out of your current HCP Terraform session by navigating to the logout page.
- Request a password reset by visiting the password reset page and entering the email address associated with your account.
- Check your email for a message from
no-reply@hashicorp.com. Follow the instructions in the email to set a new password for your account.
Troubleshooting Password Reset Email Issues
If you do not receive the password reset email, please perform the following checks:
- Check your email client's spam or junk folder.
- If you use Microsoft email services, review the troubleshooting steps in the knowledge base article on HCP Terraform Email Not Received.
- Check your organization's email quarantine system to see if the message was filtered.
- If you use a business-managed email domain, contact your internal IT or helpdesk department to ensure emails from
no-reply@hashicorp.comare not being blocked.
Outcome
After successfully setting a password for your account, you can use these credentials to complete step-up authentication prompts and access all secured resources and settings within your HCP Terraform account.
