Overview
When users attempt to reset their password for HCP or HCP Terraform, the process differs depending on whether the account is a standalone HCP Terraform account or linked to an HCP account. This article outlines the correct steps for each scenario.
Problem Statement
Users may sometimes encounter issues when resetting their password through the HCP Terraform portal, especially if their account is linked to HCP. A common error message is:
This happens because credentials are managed either directly in Terraform (standalone) or through HCP/external identity providers (linked accounts).
Resolution
1. Resetting Password for Standalone HCP Terraform Accounts
- Go to the HCP Terraform portal.
- Click Forgot Password on the login screen.
- Enter your registered email address.
- Follow the link sent to your email to reset your password.
2. Resetting Password for Linked Accounts (HCP + HCP Terraform)
Depending on how the account was created, use one of the following methods:
a) If you have an Email/Password HCP account:
- Navigate to the HCP portal.
- Click Sign in.
- Enter your registered email address.
- Click Forgot Password.
- A password reset email will be sent to your registered address.
b) If you use GitHub to log in:
- Go to the HCP Terraform portal.
- Click Continue with HCP account.
- Choose Sign in with GitHub.
- Click Forgot Password and enter your email address.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Wrong portal: Use the correct portal depending on your account type (Terraform standalone vs HCP-linked).
- GitHub users: Password resets via email are not available; use GitHub login instead.
- No reset email received: Check your spam/junk folder and confirm the correct email address is used.
